Why Nostr matters for streaming

You need reach

Streaming has always been open-source friendly. You can run your own RTMP server (SRS, Owncast, OME), broadcast to it with free tools like OBS, and host the recordings yourself. Done right, open source technology can be great for streamers. No platform is gating your reach, no ads impacting your viewers, no risk of being deplatformed, no platform taking a cut of what you earn on stream.

But live streaming has one problem the DIY stack has never solved: you have to reach viewers at the exact moment you go live. If your viewers can’t discover you the moment you go live, they miss you. That’s why live streaming historically centralised around a few big platforms: to give streamers the reach at the moment they need it.

The price of that reach is ownership. On a centralised platform you don’t own:

  • Your stream — they decide whether to keep serving it.
  • Your followers — they’re the platform’s relationship, not yours.
  • Your replays and clips — stored on their infrastructure, deletable on their terms.
  • Your payments — buyers go through their checkout, paying fees you don’t choose.
  • Your visibility — you can be shadow-banned, throttled, or deplatformed at any time.

You get the audience and lose the freedom.

Nostr solves this

Nostr solves discoverability for streamers. It’s the open-protocol way to be discovered — to notify the open internet that you’ve gone live, and have every Nostr-aware app and website pick it up immediately. Your stream announcement reaches Shosho.live, Primal, Amethyst, Nostrudel, Zap Stream , and any other app and website where Nostr lives are shown, the moment you go live. No platform gating sits between you and your viewers.

That means you can own the whole stack and still get found:

  • Stream from your own RTMP server if you want to. Or use Shosho Server. Or use any service that exposes an HLS URL.
  • Keep your replays and clips wherever you like — your own host, your own retention policy. Forever, if you choose.
  • Sell products through your own checkout — your Shopify, your Stripe, your Lightning wallet. It is flexible enough for you to set up what works best for you.
  • Take your followers, profile, and history with you to any Nostr app. None of it is locked behind a platform login. If you choose to move on, the content and contacts you’ve built go with you.
