Back up your private key

On Nostr, your private key is your profile. There is no email reset, no “forgot password” flow, and no support team that can recover it for you. If you lose your key, you lose access to that account permanently — your followers, your reputation, your history all stay with the key.

Shosho does not ever get access to your private key and we cannot help you recover it.

Even if you enter your key directly into Shosho app or website, it is only ever kept locally on your device. We cannot help you recover it.

If you want to keep using the same key, it’s important to back it up.

Get your private key

In Shosho, open Settings and find the Copy your Nostr private key row. Press Copy and your private key (an nsec1… string) is copied to your clipboard.

You’ll only see this option if you logged in by pasting your private key (the Private key (nsec) login method). If you logged in with Amber or Nostr Connect, Shosho doesn’t have your key — your signer app does, and that’s where you’d back it up from.

Ideas for where to keep your key

Pick whichever feels right for you. Many people use more than one.

  • A password manager like 1Password, Bitwarden, or Apple Keychain — convenient and already part of your routine.
  • A printed paper copy tucked somewhere safe — a fireproof box, a safety deposit box, with other important documents.
  • An encrypted file on a USB drive kept offline.

Or keep your key in a remote signer

If pasting an nsec around feels fragile, you can keep the key in a dedicated signer app instead. A signer holds your private key and authorises actions on your behalf without ever exposing the key to Shosho or any other app — see Signers.

If you do lose your key

There’s no way to recover it. You will need to create a new key and rebuild from there.

If this has happened to you, then create your new key, and then share it on another social platform so yours followers can find you again.
